Accessing therapy

Where can I access therapy?

Services may be available from a range of places, including:

  • A general practitioner or family doctor
  • places of work
  • community centres
  • hospitals
  • schools
  • universities and colleges
  • some voluntary and charitable organizations.

Private therapists may be found in Finding a Canadian Certified Counsellor. Please note most of these practitioners will charge for their services.

How is therapy delivered?

Traditionally, therapy is delivered to individuals or groups in a face-to-face setting. However, individuals can also receive therapy over the telephone or online via e-mail or ‘live’ discussion.

Can I always choose what therapist I want to see?

No. This is only possible if you wish to see a therapist privately. If you are seeing a therapist in an organization or through a practitioner’s referral, it is likely that one will be allocated to you.
